Pre-hospital care provided by emergency medical services (EMS) professionals at the scene of an emergency is crucial to saving lives. Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s Emergency Medical Services team is the most experienced Advanced Life Support (ALS) service in Delaware County, operating since 1974. The team serves 15 municipalities, including the area from the Delaware state line to the Philadelphia City line along the Delaware River.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Crozer’s EMS team consists of 56 full-time paramedics, six part-time paramedics, and 10 other staff members. This highly-trained team handles approximately 18,000 emergency responses per year with five transport ambulances and three aid cars.
Through the Critical Care Ambulance Service, Crozer EMS provides inter-system transfer to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for high-risk patients who require advanced care, such as invasive monitoring or hemodynamic management. Paramedics have received special training and use advanced equipment, such as 12-lead EKG machines that can send critical patient information to the Emergency Department before the patient arrives. Patients can be transferred to Crozer from all Crozer-Keystone facilities, which include Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Springfield Hospital, Taylor Hospital, Community Hospital and Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake.
The Crozer Emergency Medical Services Training Institute trains health care professionals to provide vital care at the scene of an emergency as an EMT-Paramedic. Classes are taught at Delaware County Community College where students in the EMSTI can earn up to 48 credits toward an associate’s degree.
